Our History
Gender Networks was founded in 2009 as “The Network of Networks for Gender,” an initiative designed to connect and empower gender-focused employee network leaders across various industries. Created by current co-chair Dr Vanessa Vallely OBE alongside senior leaders from Bank of New York Mellon and Morgan Stanley, the network set out to foster collaboration, share knowledge, and advance gender equality in the workplace. What began as a pioneering effort quickly evolved into a crucial resource for professionals in gender employee network leadership roles, offering a platform for quarterly meetings, workshops, and events where members could exchange best practices, discuss emerging gender issues, and develop strategies to promote women’s advancement and male allyship. From 2013 to 2016, Birgit Neu co-chaired the network with Vanessa, contributing to its rapid growth and influence.

In 2016, the network rebranded as Gender Networks, reflecting its expanded vision and impact. This rebrand marked a significant milestone, positioning the network as a central hub for networking, innovation, leadership, and growth within the gender equality space.
Today, Gender Networks continues to empower professionals leading gender employee networks by providing expert insights, resources, opportunities for cross-company and cross diversity strand collaboration, and connectivity to gender-focussed charitable initiatives, all while championing gender equity across industries. In 2024, Vanessa was rejoined by Birgit as co-chair, further solidifying the network’s role as a driving force in shaping inclusive workplaces, supporting the next generation of gender network leaders and ensuring gender networks can be fit for the future.
